About Our Coffee and Cake

An ethical and responsible approach

“Did you know that every day, in Bristol, we use a staggering 66,000 single-use coffee cups? Unfortunately, many of these cups end up littering the River Avon, our harbourside, and our streets.”
Refill - A City To Sea Campaign

When I took the lease at Cabot, I wrote a business plan. In that business plan, I aimed to have an in-house, ethical coffee service by year four, and it’s happened just before we hit year three. We run so many events and workshops that having a ‘hospitality’ offering was too good an opportunity to miss. Of course, in true Prior style, we are doing it as ethically and responsibly as possible.

Edible Cups

Even biodegradable and compostable versions need special conditions and often can’t be processed at home or recycled, therefore ending up in landfill. We do not want to add to this, so we are using edible cups. However, we are aware these are not suitable for those with gluten intolerances or allergies. If you cannot have gluten, you can use one of our ceramic mugs but must drink your coffee in the shop, purchase a reusable cup, or bring your own.

10% of Each Coffee Goes To Charity

10% of each coffee goes to Team Canteen, who help reduce food insecurity in Bristol by linking the hospitality sector with food charities and local projects, increasing access to healthy food for vulnerable people.

Recently, Team Canteen have:

  • Delivered 1,000 recipe kits to Bristolians experiencing food vulnerability.
  • Run a long and successful fundraiser for Aid Box Community, supporting displaced people in Bristol.
  • Hosted the ‘Antibanquet’, which raised £100,000 to help distribute food all over Bristol via the Bristol Local Food Fund.
  • Produced Caring in Bristol’s homeless Christmas event, feeding and supporting Bristol's homeless community for 7 days over Christmas.

Ethical Coffee

Our coffee is supplied and roasted by Wogan Coffee, which is less than 0.5 miles from PRIOR. A family-run business for over 50 years, Wogan Coffee prides itself on sourcing hand-picked coffees that are 100% ethical, direct trade, sustainable, fully traceable, and of the utmost tastiness.

Milk

We use refillable bottles, 100% organic, and with no waste. We also do not charge extra for non-dairy milks.

Coffee Waste

We are collecting the used coffee grounds to make new products with... watch this space!
